- 2 tazas sugar beans (dry)
- 6 tazas agua
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 dientes de ajo picados

- 1-2 hojas de laurel
- 1-2 cucharadita oil or butter (optional)
- diced tomatoes, chopped chili, or herbs (Optional)
Soak the beans: Rinse beans and soak in water for 4–6 hours or overnight to reduce cooking time and improve digestibility.
Boil: Drain the soaked beans and place in a large pot with 6 cups fresh water. Add onions, garlic, bay leaves, and optional ingredients.
Cocer a fuego lento: Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until beans are tender.
Season: Add salt, pepper, and oil or butter near the end of cooking. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Sirve: Serve warm as a side dish, main meal, or with pap.
