Ingrédients

  • 2 cups self-raising flour
  • 1 cup plain yoghurt (or maas/buttermilk)
  • 1 tsp baking powder (optional, for extra lift)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar works best)
  • 1 - 1½ cups chopped biltong
  • 2–3 tbsp chopped spring onion (optional)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder or a crushed garlic clove (optional)
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Extra cheese
  • A sprinkle of paprika or dried herbs

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a loaf tin or line it with baking paper.
  • In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add yoghurt and stir until a soft dough forms. Don’t overmix — just bring it together.
  • Fold in cheese, biltong, and any extras (spring onion, garlic, pepper).
  • Spoon into loaf tin and smooth the top. Add extra cheese if you want a crispy top layer.
  • Bake for 35–45 minutes, or until golden and a skewer comes out clean.
  • Let it cool for 10–15 minutes before slicing (important so it doesn’t crumble).
