- 1 long soft bread roll (Portuguese roll / French loaf / baguette)
- 4–6 large potatoes (fresh hot chips)
- Masala-spiced steak or thin sliced steak (optional)
- Polony or Vienna sausage (optional)

- Mayonnaise (optional)

Prep the chips (slap chips): Cut potatoes into thick fries. Deep-fry in hot oil until golden and crispy. Drain and sprinkle with salt.
Cook your protein:Masala steak: Season steak strips with masala, salt, pepper, and fry in a skillet until cooked. Polony/Viennas: Fry slices until lightly browned.Chicken: Cook seasoned chicken strips until done. Prepare bread: Slice the loaf lengthwise but keep it intact at the back. Spread mayonnaise (and atchar/chutney if using) on both sides.
Assemble the Gatsby: Layer the bottom half with hot chips first — this is essential! Add your cooked meat on top of the chips. Add shredded lettuce, tomato slices, and onions. Drizzle generously with peri-peri/hot sauce.
Serve: Close the sandwich and cut into portions (traditionally 4–6 pieces).
