South African Potato Bake
This South African potato bake is a creamy, oven-baked side dish made with layered potatoes and cheese, commonly served at braais and family meals. It’s easy to prepare, uses everyday ingredients, and delivers comforting traditional flavour.

- 6 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 onion, finely sliced (optional)
- 1 cup fresh cream
- ½ cup milk
- 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar or gouda)
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp mixed herbs or thyme (optional)
- 1 garlic clove, crushed (optional)
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a medium baking dish with butter.
Layer half the sliced potatoes in the dish, followed by onion (if using), salt, pepper, and herbs.
Add a few dots of butter, then repeat with the remaining potatoes and seasoning.
Mix the cream, milk, and garlic together, then pour evenly over the potatoes.
Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes until the potatoes are tender.
Remove foil, sprinkle grated cheese on top, and bake uncovered for another 15–20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
