Tomato Bredie
Tomato Bredie. This authentic recipe is simple to make and guaranteed to impress.

- 1.5 kg Lamb (on the bone) Use stewing cuts like neck, shoulder, or rib – bone adds flavour
- 2 Onions Finely chopped
- 3 cloves Garlic Minced (or 1 tsp garlic paste)
- 4 Potatoes Peeled and cut into quarters
- 2 x 400g cans Tinned Tomatoes Or 1 kg chopped fresh tomatoes
- 1 small can (about 70g) Tomato Paste Adds richness and colour
- 1 tbsp Sugar Balances the acidity of the tomatoes
- To taste Salt & Pepper Start with 1 tsp salt and adjust
- 2 Tbsp Oil For browning meat and onions
- 1–2 cups Water or Stock Enough to just cover the meat
- Optional Spices 1 stick cinnamon, 2 cloves, 1 bay leaf Option to skip, but adds Cape Malay flavour
Fry onions and garlic in oil.
Add lamb and brown it.
Add tinned tomatoes, paste, sugar, salt, pepper, and spices.
Simmer for 1 hour.
Add potatoes, cook until soft.
Serve with rice.
