Ingrédients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 sachet (10 g) instant yeast
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp melted butter or oil
  • 1 ½ cups warm milk (or water)
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  • Add melted butter or oil, then gradually mix in the warm milk to form a soft dough.
  • Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Cover the bowl with a cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions (about golf-ball size for small rolls, larger if preferred).
  • Shape each portion into a smooth ball and place on a lightly floured surface. Let them rest for 10–15 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough in — it should sizzle and rise slowly.
  • Fry the dough balls in batches until golden brown on all sides, about 3–5 minutes per batch. Turn carefully with a slotted spoon.
  • Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
  • Serve warm, plain or filled with butter, jam, cheese, or mince.
